Bars,'Cape Colony','Orange Free State','Transvaal',;South Africa 1901','South Africa 1902' - 26880 Private W.J.CAPEWELL, 102nd.Company, Imperial Yeomanry: (Worcestershire) : (WILLIAM JAMES CAPEWELL - Born around 1874 at Ladywood, Birmingham, a bedstead maker by trade at the time of his enlistment on 15 February 1901: Served in South Africa from 15 March 1901: The 102nd.Company formed part of the 5th.Battalion,Imperial Yeomanry: On Monday 24 February 1902 the Battalion was in a convoy travelling from Wolmaranstand and was some 32 km. from Klerksdorp where it camped on the banks of the Ysterspruit. The following day it was attacked by Boer Forces under the direct command of General Jacobus Hercules De La Rey. After a brief engagement and inspite of a determined rearguard action the convoy was overwhelmed by the Boer Commandos. The Boers made off with a massive haul of rifles and ammunition which enabled De La Rey to resume operations. In this engagement the Yeomanry suffered nineteen killed, with forty three wounded of whom nine lated died of their wounds: Private CAPEWELL received a severe gun-shot wound to the his right thigh and died from the effects of this wound on 4 March 1902 at Elandsfontein.): Sold with verification and copy Service Papers: Top two bars secured by unofficial rivets : A very scarce medal to an Imperial Yeomanry casualty GVF - £445
